Mental Health Awareness Week: Services expanded in Ealing

14 May 2018

Ealing Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), which provides talking therapies, has expanded its services to provide even more support to people in Ealing with long term health conditions.

Ealing IAPT is part of a national initiative to provide psychological therapies to people with physical health conditions who have become worried, anxious or low in mood.

The service already has a good record of working with patients presenting with long term physical conditions – such as diabetes, heart disease and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alongside anxiety and depression. Recently, the service has been extended into specialist physical health teams, to reach more people in need quicker.

Carolyn Regan, Chief Executive of West London Mental Health Trust said: “The Trust is delighted to be supporting this government initiative with a wide and varying range of workshops and support services available in our locality. The provision of this service is already seeing enormous benefits to both service users and physical health teams, and the service will continue to improve better health outcomes for patients within our locality who are suffering longer term or chronic health conditions.”

At West London Mental Health Trust, integrating physical and mental healthcare is a priority – we know that mental health patients die 15-20 years early due to physical health problems. We have seen that therapists who are co-located in physical health teams are better able to communicate with physical healthcare professionals, which will provide better health outcomes such as:

  • Making and sustaining healthy lifestyle changes.
  • Overcoming fears, anxieties or low mood related to living with a long-term health condition.
  • Supporting patients to reduce the impact of their condition on their work, family life and other activities.

People aged 18+ with a long-term health condition who are experiencing anxiety, stress or depression are encouraged to self-refer. You can speak in total confidence about anything that might be troubling you and seek advice in any of the following ways:

  • By calling Ealing IAPT: 020 3313 5660
  • By calling the Trust 24/7 support line: 0300 123 1156
