Next week marks the 10th annual National Apprenticeship week. WLMHT is currently offering apprenticeships in health and social care, business administration, management and foundation degree apprenticeships.
We will be running two open days later this month (see below) where those who are interested can visit and speak to members of our Learning & Development Team and find out more on the Trust’s apprenticeship programme.
What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed to give
individuals the sustainable skills they need to succeed in their chosen occupation. They have been designed by employers and include a combination of on and off the job training. Apprenticeships are:
- Real jobs-Apprentices are employees, with the same rights as any other employee. They must be employed for at least 30 hours per week. They can be existing staff or new employees.
Include formal and informal on and off the job training. The apprentice is required to spend at least 20% of their time on off-the job training.
The apprentice must be working towards achieving an approved apprenticeship standard and the apprenticeship must last for at least 12 months.
What are we offering?
From May 2017 we are aiming to expand the apprenticeships we offer and are currently looking at providers who will be approved to deliver the following apprenticeships we will be looking to offer:
- Health and Social Care Level 2 and 3
- Foundation Degrees
- Business Administration Level 2 and 3
- Healthcare Support Services Level 2 and 3
- Leadership and Management
- Property Maintenance Operative
- Customer Service
We will be hosting two open days in March where service providers and staff will be on hand to discuss the apprenticeships available.

Myth: “Aren’t apprenticeships just for young people? “
Busted: Apprenticeships are relevant to everyone over the age of 16- looking to improve their skills and progress their career this can be both new members of staff and members of the existing work force
Myth: “Apprenticeships are just for construction and hairdressing”
Busted: There are now apprenticeships available for over 1.500 hundred job roles, in occupations ranging from construction and engineering, health and social care to accountancy and management consulting- and range at levels from the equivalent of five good GCSEs to master’s degree level.
Myth: “Apprentices are too expensive”
Busted: From 1 May 2017 the trust will become a levy paying employer and will be required make an investment in Apprenticeships (0.5% of their annual pay bill). The aim of the Apprenticeship Levy is to improve the quality and quantity of Apprenticeships in England and so it can meet the government target of 3 million apprenticeships by 2020. An additional major facet of the Levy is providing a sustainable workforce and bridge the skills gap affecting many industries.
Myth: “If I recruit and train an apprentice, they’ll just leave for more money somewhere else when they have finished their apprenticeship”
Busted: 92% of employers believe that apprenticeships create a more motivated workplace, as other staff members contribute positively to the training aspect –this increases overall employee retention rates.
