We’ve made a short film about the important and often misunderstood work that takes place at Broadmoor Hospital, one of only three high secure mental health hospitals in the country.
In order to protect patient confidentiality, all the faces and voices you will see and hear in this film are either actors or members of staff. Please select one of the chapters below to view the video segment, alternatively you can view the video in full here.
An introduction to Broadmoor Hospital
Senior clinicians talk about why Broadmoor Hospital exists and what it does.
The importance of security
It’s important that patients and the public are safe and secure. At Broadmoor Hospital, we use three types of security – physical, procedural and relational.
Assessment of patients
When patients first arrive at the hospital, they will go on to an admission ward for initial assessment of their mental health needs and to determine what range of treatments will help them in their recovery. We call this a care plan.
Treatment of patients
Staff speak about the types of treatment available to patients and explain the importance of medications and therapy.
Daily life at Broadmoor Hospital
The hospital is a therapeutic environment and patients are encouraged to participate in a range of activities. Here, ward life, recreational and educational activities are explained.
Research and professional development
Broadmoor Hospital promotes its commitment to research and innovation, providing staff with professional development opportunities and training.
Where do patients go after leaving the hospital? Staff talk about the care routes patients take once discharged from the hospital.
